Apply today! The 8th annual Austin Funky Chicken Coop Tour is on March 26, 2016. The tour is less than six months away, and it’s time to start thinking about entering your coop! We’re looking for potential coop hosts within the Austin city limits and its ETJ that are compliant with current city codes and ordinances and are willing to share their coop creations for a one day viewing by the public.
Our 2016 tour theme is Chickens as Zero Waste Heroes. Our feathered friends have an important role to play in helping the City of Austin reach its Zero Waste goals. Far from being merely a pet or a hobby, these backyard dynamos save money for taxpayers and the City by diverting waste from the landfill. They break down our food scraps by eating them, and their nitrogen-rich manure can become an ingredient in incredible compost. Natural behaviors (scratching and pecking) improve soil composition. And they’re the cutest darned bug zappers you ever saw.
Every good steward of urban poultry is encouraged to apply. We’d especially like to show off zero waste backyard innovations. Do you have a unique or special way of integrating your coop and poultry into a system that minimizes the waste you (and potentially your neighbors) send to the landfill? Have you re-engineered your coop or run to help your backyard composters do their job more effectively? Other green features, such as gardens, rainwater collection, solar energy, aquaponics, xeriscaping, and/or raising other food-producing animals are also a great fit. Neighbors that have several coops in a close proximity are encouraged to submit their coop applications for consideration.
Are you an Early Bird? Apply by December 31st 2015 to be eligible for special prizes from our Sponsors. Apply Now!! Application deadline is January 24, 2016.
If you have questions, visit our Resources page. The Austin and Central Texas Backyard Poultry Meetup Group is another great place to ask questions and hear from local chicken owners.
